Characters and setting [edit]

The television series was based on the characters and ambiance of the source books, but not on their stories. The tales are set mostly in and around Amsterdam, where Commissarias van der Valk is a cynical yet smart investigator. Drugs, sex, and murder are among the casework's grim themes, which contrast with the scenic locales and uplifting theme music (see below).

Piet Van der Valk and his crew examine a succession of high-profile cases involving art, politics, addiction, mysticism, and the fashion business. Van der Valk and his crew return for another engrossing series of murder investigations set against Amsterdam's gorgeous background.

I've never watched the show's original 1970s incarnation, which many seem to recall fondly. I'm not sure many others will feel the same way about this relaunch. The primary actor constantly has a grimace on his face, as if he wishes he was someplace else. At one point at a crime scene, his character states, "I could do without this," and this is how he seems throughout the film. He lends the part a one-dimensionality reminiscent of David Caruso on CSI: Miami. He is not wearing sunglasses; his trademark seems to be his scowl and the close-fitting, buttoned-up black shirt he wears throughout. He resembles a restaurant waitress more than a detective. The remainder of the ensemble is constructed in the manner of today's conventional paint-by-numbers inclusionary casting. It's odd to see so many British actors roaming the streets of Amsterdam portraying Dutch characters. Some of the British accents are also a little working class, which seems to fit the Amsterdam scene even more. It's just strange. In sum, neither fun nor enlightening. I made it through three episodes and have decided to call it a day.
