On January 27, 2014, Edward Snowden disclosed papers revealing that the NSA and GCHQ collected Google Maps searches performed on cellphones and used them to track down the persons who made them. According to one leaked paper from 2008, "[i]t practically implies that everyone using Google Maps on a smartphone is assisting a GCHQ system."
