Rose Ann Miller was a pioneering educator of Jamaican ancestry who taught extensively on the Gold Coast in both Basel Mission and state-run schools. Miller moved to the Gold Coast as a youngster in 1843, together with her parents and brothers, as part of a group of 24 West Indian immigrants recruited by the Danish pastor Andreas Riis and the Basel Mission to assist with evangelistic efforts in Ghana. Peter Hall was a Jamaican teacher, missionary, and Presbyterian priest born on the Gold Coast. He was elected the first Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast in 1918, a position similar to that of chief administrator of the national church organization. Hall was the son of John Hall, one of 24 West Indian missionaries sent to the Danish Protectorate of Christiansborg by the Basel Evangelical Missionary Society.
It is currently a fully fledged public institution operating under the aegis of the Ghana Education Service. Originally, the institution was to be upgraded to a university, but that plan was shelved once the church established the Presbyterian University College in 1998. [3][5][6][7] The curriculum has been expanded to include standards for general education that are adapted to the needs of a developing nation. Five years after the Basel Mission founded the country's first elementary school in 1843, the school was created. Additionally, the Basel Mission, and subsequently the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, pioneered the establishment of hundreds of elementary and secondary schools, as well as teacher training institutions.
