The von Trapp family is a huge hit at the Festival. They do their last song and, with the applause still ringing in their ears, they depart while the Festival judges deliberate on the acts they have just seen. They have won the Festival, but as soon as their victory is revealed, they vanish. They take refuge in the abbey, where they are hidden in the burial vault by the nuns. The brownshirts search unsuccessfully throughout the abbey, but their hiding location is found by Rolfe, who pauses when he sees Liesl, allowing them just enough time to escape. They steal the monastery caretaker's automobile and depart; nobody can pursue them since two nuns had removed crucial engine components from their cars while scouring the convent for the von Trapps. He is a devout patriot who is concerned about the emergence of the extreme right in neighboring Germany and the possibility of a merger. V Trapp conducts his family like a ship out of desperation and intense grief for his wife. Maria is faced with hostility by the youngsters and is turned off by the captain's views when she gets on the scene. Eventually, she develops ties with the whole family, particularly with Liesl, the oldest child, whom she mentors into maturity, thereby filling the vacuum left by Liesl's missing mother.
