In October 2011, a squirrel raced over home plate during a Phillies-Cardinals playoff game. The Cardinals would eventually win the game and series. In St. Louis, the squirrel became an immediate celebrity, appearing on morning talk programs and in newspapers and magazines. 1989: Despite a grim prognosis after the pitching staff's crippling injuries in spring training, the Cardinals stayed in the race until the last week of the season. The Redbirds closed to within a half-game of the division-leading Chicago Cubs on September 9th with a stunning come-from-behind victory, but a six-game losing streak followed, and the Cards finished third with an 86-76 record on the last day of the season.
