Perhaps the most divergent reaction came from the Estate Pinot Noir. Some individuals, like me, adored it and considered it to be their favorite of the bunch. Others appreciated the wine but preferred the Barrel Select or Whole Cluster, despite their inability to explain their preference. One reviewer stated that it tasted stronger than the other two, however it is just slightly stronger than the other two, and all of the wines were around 14%. Other criticisms included âvelvety,â and there were several complaints about the lengthy conclusion.
Syrah or shiraz is an unexpectedly delicious accompaniment to grilled salmon fillets. Why? The gritty char aroma imparted by the grill marks on the fish complements the sweet taste of black currants and the silky smoothness of the wine. With many of their wines available at Costco locations nationally, we thought it would be great to combine their Pinot Noirs together and do a blind tasting with a few other wine enthusiasts; this way, we could really compare the subtleties of the various bottles.
We kept things simple by having each individual taste a little pour of each wine with the bottles covered and then jotting down remarks. I, too, took part in the tasting, entirely blind. My one advantage was that I knew which wines were included in the tasting but had no clue how they were poured.

88 CENTS Whole Cluster Pinot Noir 2017 from Willamette Valley Vineyards This wine is bright, lively, and fragrant, and it is an excellent value for Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Cinnamon and a hint of roasted coffee combine with vanilla due to the oak exposure. The wine has a salty character (which is a positive thing) owing to the well-managed acidity retention. On the taste, there is a hint of clove and what I can only characterize as dried mushrooms (shiitake?). This is one you'll return to again and time again.
This perennial favorite has vivid, freshly harvested raspberry and marionberry berries set against a mineral foundation. With a blend of Pommard and Wdenswil clones fermented with the stems, it avoids herbal excess and ends with a palate-cleansing rush of acidity. âBuzz is a horse enthusiast. He is 90 years old and continues to castrate horses. That, to me, is Yamhill-Carlton. âThose are Doug Tunnell's, not our, words. We're in his dining room, sipping a vertical of Gamay Noir, a more dependable, forgiving substitute for Pinot Noir. Tunnell is a name we recognize but cannot place. (We subsequently discovered that he was a CBS war journalist, and so was on our television screens every night in the early 1990s.) That would certainly account for his silky, polished baritone and proclivity for clever quotations.)
