Warner Brothers asserts that it continues to support the 3D format, but how seriously can we take that assertion when the company continues to exploit 3D fans with subpar audio? Kong: Skull Island (or "K:SI") is Warner's third release this year to have a Dolby Atmos track on the conventional Blu-ray and UHD discs but not on the 3D disc. Repeated enquiries to the studio have resulted in an inability to discover a suitable explanation for this pattern of omission. Warner is either purposefully harming its own 3D initiatives, or the technical decision-makers have no clue what they're doing. (The two hypotheses do not have to be mutually exclusive.) In the case of K:SI, the exclusion is particularly vexing, given the quality of the 3D presentation and the evident auditory gain offered by the Atmos track over the lossless DTS track with which the 3D disc was shackled. Marlow reunites with his wife and sees his kid for the first time during the credits. Conrad and Weaver are imprisoned and recruited by Monarch in a post-credits scene. San Lin and Brooks warn them that Kong is not the sole king of monsters and show them archival film of cave drawings portraying Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. I can't disclose the character's name for fear of Marvel severing my head, but I use the same ideas of what it means to discard the BS and portray a legitimately nasty character. And it is effective.
